Description

it's just a dragon 3D scan. I'm perfecting my 3D scan to solid object skills. Which then go to my digital sculpting skills then to my 3D animation skills, to my 3D game skills. Long road.

What type of scanner are you using? I use a Nextengine HD 3d scanner. I had the exact same problem with scanning translucents. I purchased a can of Spotcheck SKD-S2 Developer by Magnaflux for translucents and reflective materials. It sprays on as a liquid and dries into a powder that completely coats the object in white and washes off very easily with just soap and water.

Yup..that was the problem. So easy trick. Powder the wings. Just get like a soft fat brush and baby powder anything shiny, or too dark or transparent. Give the laser something to bounce off of, and you're set. It isn't perfect of course, but I'm going to fix all that in my CAD or Sculpting software. Much easier than creating a creature from scratch. It's like having a template. It's great.

I'm getting much better at this scanning thing. :-)

i have this same dragon, its blue and white with translucent wings, i tried to scan it a few times but those wings never turned out well, how did you deal with this problem? if your dragon has translucent wings that is.

Thanks, yes I have the stl. No matter what I do, it's too big to upload. I'm trying to get it down to size.

You can get it down to 48 MB by importing and then exporting from Blender. It works because you have a text STL, and Blender exports to binary STLs (At least the newest Blender does!). You can download Blender from http://www.blender.org/downloa...

Meshlab app -> Filters menu -> Quadratic edge collapse decimation (or similar, I forget the exact name for decimate there) will let you specify exactly how many polygons you want to output.
