Featured Thing!

Description

Update: a dual color version is now available: thingiverse.com/thing:218535

So you have opened your heart for this wonderful person. Now you can show him or her what is inside.
Here is the box to present your Valentines gift in style. The bottom and lid are bonded together so they'll never loose each other.

If you cannot 3d print yourself you can buy a printed version at 3dWeeb's Etsy store (http://www.etsy.com/uk/listing/157663617/heart-box-a-3d-printed-box-perfect-for)

I made one as well. It was better if I don't use a brim next time.
I think if you open it often the bands between will break. Can you make them a little bit thicker?
Thanks for this nice upload.
I printed one up last night. I do like the hinge design, it works very well. As it is it's just a tad difficult to close, you can't just snap it shut without paying attention, it takes me a solid couple of seconds to close. Fine for something that is only intended to be opened once, maybe less than ideal if you intend it to be opened and closed frequently. Very nice look though, and great execution on that hinge.
Hi John, Did it work this time?

* Update: I made some slight changes to get an easier snap . They are in heartcontainer fdm filmhinge4.stl*

The bottom and lid of this heartshaped box are connected with a filmhinge so you cannot loose the lid. It snaps shut with a little twist.

This was printed in PLA on a prusa mendel. I am very curious how this will print on other types of 3dprinters so please let me know your results.
the size for printing is 164 x 147 x 33 mm
The closed box is 100 x 100 x 35mm
Sofar I have seen very nice result from makerbots even scale down to 0.6 the hinges work great.

I used Slic3r with concentric infill for bottom,
bottom layer 0,4mm
next layers 0,3mm

To get good filmhinges it will help if you have a concentric first layer infill, have a nicely printed first layer and carefully remove the print from the bed.

What a great design! This will be for sure one of the first prints once I'll build my 3D printer. Thanks.

Thanx, Hec! I would love to see the results!
WONDERFUL BOX!! Thank you!!
Thanks Tim, you're welcome
Printed it on my Printrbot jr at 50%.... looks great! My hinges didn't come out right, so i'm reprinting now at 75%. concentric fill, and this time I changed fill pattern to 0 degrees, and lowered the print head just a tad to get better first layer. it's printing now, but it's looking good! thanks for sharing.
Hi John, Did it work this time?
I was also amazed by how it comes out of a makerbot, i just saw one myself and it was great. I guess it is time to finetune my prusa or get a makerbot myself. Anyways, I am very glad the design is helping getting more wifes and girlfriends enthusiastic about 3d printing. I guess the daughters will be my next goal.
I printed one on my MakerBot Replicator 2 Desktop 3D Printer at default settings. It came out great. My wife loves it and wants to use it for Christmas presents!
This was an amazing print job! Thanks so much. My wife is now understanding why I bought the Cube X Duo. :)
Hi Cometman, I am glad I could help creating a better understanding in your relationship ;) Does the cube duo have a dual printhead? I am planning on making a dualcolor version of the box.
Yes it does... I haven't done anything in two color yet however.
Excellent idea and clever hinge design!
That hinge is really clever. Nice job.
The most creative thing i ever printed and my girlfriend loves it :)

Thanks Luke!
Thank you very much Emmet. I feel honored getting such a nice compliment from a great designer you. At our fablab we have already printed a number of your designs and we always get great comments from our guest that mostly see 3d printed stuff for the first time.
I don't know how I missed this; it really should have been featured. Very innovative design and beautifully crafted. Thanks for the inspiration.
