Summary

Designed to press into the ends of the x-axis rails on a shapeoko 2 to keep the two pieces of makerslide rigidly attached together. The dimensions are such that the rail-rail spacing of the two sections are correct for the default spacer setup for the shapeoko 2 x-axis wheels. It is sized EXACT, so pressing them into the channel requires a hammer or similar.

It's been a year... Has anyone tested deflection?

Also... Where were the dimensions between the slides found? Are they in specs I missed or something?

With a slight modification this could be used to suspend a dual maker slide track from the ceiling for an overhead camera slider. If you simply extend the middle section out from one end a few inches like (https://imgur.com/yrbUFGz) you could then use standard hardware store L-brackets on either side of the extension to lag it to a ceiling joist.

I've installed 3 of them across an 1000mm build and it seems to work really well. I haven't run a job yet but the difference in rotational "wiggle" about that axis is significantly less when I try by hand. and the two pieces feel like a solid extrusion now. It's pretty easy to hammer one of these down in to the center using a thin piece of steel. What I've been wondering, is, if this does actually help, and it seems to, why have I not seen it integrated in to build like the x-carve, I'm wondering what they know that leads them to not consider providing these with those kits.

Does this help with deflection in the gantry? I have the longer rail upgrade and I need prevent movement to improve accuracy

It does not prevent deflection all that much with how I have them installed. These pieces are pretty tight in the extrusions, so mine are only installed on each end, which does not provide additional support in the center where the deflection will be the worst.

It might be possible to hammer some of these deeper into the extrusion to make the two separate beams seem more like one (which should help deflection some).

installing these in the ends wont do much at all. theres already metal bolts holding the makerslide to the metal plates.

i have 8 of these printed up that i will fit this weekend as i am adding a rt0701c makita router to my machine (1mx1m)

will post back here once i have them installed and try and post some photos of them as well. but i intend to get as many into my rails as possible.

The reason I found them useful in just the ends is that it makes the two separate pieces always line up. Without these its possible that one rail is lower than the other, not parallel, etc. At least with these in both ends the pair of extrusions should always end up the same relative to each other.

yeah that makes sense! smart thinking. i have always wandered previous to these little suckers as to what the best way it do align them so you know there sqaure.

i have some machining to do today on my cnc, but after today i will start stripping it to get it ready for the new spindle on saturday! keen to see how it all works out with the mods i have ready for it. had a friend print heaps of different bits for it.

guess my next purchase next year is going to be a 3d printer of my own, they seem very handy.
