Summary

This is a two color cat model for dual extrusion 3d-printing. It was generated through a simulation of reaction diffusion on a mesh. It's derived from the MakerBot "standing cat" model.

We wanted to play around with using dual extrusion on our Replicator 1 printer to create textured 3D models. We're making an app that takes any 3D model and simulates reaction-diffusion on its surface to yield a 2-color 3D printable model composed of two STL's. What do you want us to test in the app next?

Instructions

Print on a dual extruder 3d-printer with two colors of filament

is there any way the tool to create these could be shared? I'd love to make some versions at different levels of accuracy, and detail, so that they could be printed more smoothly, and at different scales.

Could you or someone make a 2 color dog?

Is there any way I could print it in one color? I do not have the second printing head, unluckily

Hi, did you see my comment? I am writing to ask whether i can use this pic in our article. a good picture is more than a thousand words!

hello! this s Eve. I am the Chinese editor of Managing IP. We are likely to do a piece on 3D printer. Do you mind i use this picture but for free? I would definitely give a byline for you to this website. Do you think it is okay?

Having problems with the two models printing side by side. Using Makerware with a Replicator Dual head. Any ideas?

we had a similar problem but upgrading our firmware fixed it

Thanks ="geometry:disqus" href="http://disqus.com/geometry/Jessica. I just upgraded to 7.2 (Makerbot Replicator) and the problem still exists. I've given up for now but will probably come back to this at some stage.

Neat!! have you guys tried using a soluble filament for one of the stl files then getting rid of it? Please try and do this!! I would love to see pictures of the finished product!

Looks like it can be printed without support, right? What layer height did you use in the print you posted photos of?

yes, no need for support. the one in the photo was printed at .27mm layer height

Looks great! How about doing this with one of those hermit crab shell models?

we were thinking about doing a shell but at this very moment we're doing the octopus

Oh baby! I'm totally interested in that app/ testing it if you need another shop with a Rep1 dualtruder…!

Need to do a dog next.

Very very cool guys. No leaks, this is a beautiful dual print.

glad you like it :)
