Summary

Hi there,

GOOD NEWS TO ALL, THE IPHONE 5-5S VERSION IS NOW PRINTING AND WILL SEE RESULT BEFORE I ADD IT TO THINGIVERSE FOR YOU TO DOWNLOAD)

Here it is version 2!

UPDATE 01:
(plus I have added two extra stl files just now to print it in parts if you have a smaller 3D printer which now have been revised as one of those parts was bringing the other, not anymore, one part on each file)

UPDATE 02:
(in two parts now in this file) note i will make another version a bit smaller to fit on smaller 3D printers and perhaps another in pieces in case you have an even smaller machine*****

UPDATE 03:
THIS IS DONE And upladed !!! check it out now and like it(soon I will post a baby one for the iphone 6 plus)

UPDATE 04:
BUT FIRST I WILL DESIGN A KEYBOARD FOR IT THAT WILL HOUSE A THIRD PARY WIRELESS BLUETOOTH KEYBOARD I SAW ON EBAY WHICH IS CHEAP, WHITE AND LITTLE**

UPDATE 05:
I have now finished designing a keyboard that will go well with it!
I received more PLA in the mail today so I will print it tonight before i go home from work.
I received my bluetooth keyboard that I bought on Ebay to use for this project, it works fine and for under $20 AUS.
I have the apple II design almost ready to print also.
Soon i will be accepting donations through PayPal to support the making of these for you all fellow apple gadget lovers.

UPDATE 6:
Go and check the keyboard I made to go with it here:

UPDATE 07:

  • thats it done, finito la musica, pasato la festa!
This is no longer a work in progess
  • I am moving onto the next two projects, the imac box (which will be an iphone/s charging dock and maybe apple TV enclosure)
    and the Apple II)
  • photo adeed of new keyboard in the flesh

It has the apple logo and the cut out for the disk drive works without support if you print it sideways

I have printed 3 of them now, it takes about 15 hours on 'fast'.

So I thought it would be a neat idea to modify it to suit an ipad mini.

Its finished!!! check the updated photos.

update 8: (2015_10_29)
This project has taken some time, effort and resources to design and build.
(As you know any prototype is expensive at first, I am happy to wear the costs)

please go here and help me continue creating cool stuff.

I have added rice between the scafolding within the piece before it was fully printed (rice in the gap where the base is) to add weight to it so it is nice and heavy.

Thankyou Appple store in Brisbane CBD for letting me take photos at your store.

Look at my other ipad mini creations.

I used ArchiCAD, I am an architect.
I downloaded the original macintosh model as a sketch up file and import it to archicad, then I did the same for the ipad mini.
from the article I downloaded the images and changed it to suit and kept the original proportions where I could

Then I changed it a little more to be able to put in on the 3d printing bed, it just fits on my 3d touch.

And I rendered it using Artlantis really quickly

Is there an iPad Air 2 dock?

Could you modify so that it will fit an original iPad 16GB?

I could but I would not be able to print it. It would be way too big

You wrote you downloaded the original Macintosh as a model? Where did you get it? I'd very much like to have that.

I got the original from the Google warehouse in sketch up format

It looks great!
Are you happy with it?

Please for iPhone 6 (not Plus) ^^ :)

hmm, wish I would have a larger printer.

I have smaller files there so you can print it.
What volume can your printer print?

The Printrbot Simple Metal has a build volume of 150 mm (about 6 inches) square.

Do you think you could get the pieces down to that size??

Thanks!!

so nice! would be great having one like this for the Ipad Air, would you mind to share CAD files,
Thanks!

I use archiCAD which is an Architectural software.
Unless you have it the file will be useless to you
BUT..
Tell me what format you need and I can save it for that. I am in the office now so I could do it for you within the hour....

well, I often use FreeCad tool or blender, but i don´t mind if you upload the file in archiCad, I could find a way to download that tool or to export the file to other compatible format, thanks in advance!

the model has been split in case you have a smaller machine.
i had to re save one of those files as one part was coming with the other, they are now one on each file.

I have split the model into two pieces you can glue together and print separately onto a smaller 3D printer
I hope this helps you all!!

Thank you very much. But when I am not mistaken, the Part2 consists of both parts and can not be splited. Could you please check the file?
regards.
P.S: Would you recommend to print the two parts on the side as well?

hi, i added each file one at the time but it shows as one in the viewer but if you go to download them they are in fact two separate parts.
and yes do print them on their side

Hi, I downloaded Part2.stl again, but when I load it into CURA I get both parts and I can not delete one of them, only all. No way to print for me. Part1.stl is ok though.
A hint how to split both parts would help in case you can not export it any other way.
regards.

oh i see what you mean.
Let me sort that out now

Thank you very much. Now it seems to work.
Great work.
regards.

Please make one for iPad 3!

Ipad 3 is way too big!!

If you were kind enough to share the design files, I was thinking that I'd like to design one for a full size iPad.

hi there, i am more than happy to share the file however its an archicad file.
you see am an architect and thats what i use.
but i could export it as a 3Dstudio file of dwf even ifc.
tell me what format and i will do it if i can

man.. I'm not a professional.. I use free cad and openscad...
STEP, IGES, OBJ, STL, DXF, SVG, STL, DAE, IFC or OFF, NASTRAN, VRML
Actually, I guess not STL.. I can't do much with those... or don't know how to.

ok I can help you...tomorrow I will add a few file options for you to try them out.

Can you think of a good way to break the file into smaller pieces so that it could be printed on a smaller printer?

yes!
i will break it up for you in parts next week.

Could you reduce the height a little as it does not fit on my 25cmx25cm 3D printer?
Also it would be cool if you could implement some kind of cable management for loading the device with the lightnig cable. Would be nice if it would hide somewhere behind the dock...
regards.

P.S.: Great job.
For my printer reducing the height for about 1 cm would do the job btw. e.g at the bottom.

what I have done instead is make it in two components so many other people can benefit of printing it in smaller 3D printers.
remember the cable is on its side on at the bottom of the dock

yes i can slice off a little to make it fit (you mean a bit off where the floppy disc is?)
i will do it on monday

Thank you very much.

Bring on the iPhone 6+ version! :)

I have it done already but it wont fit nicely, I will make the slot a little bigger then upload it, i am waiting for more filament to arrive.
Quality control is a priority before I release any project out!!!

Very nice. I think it would take 15 days on my printer???? though.
