We are working on a Map to STL converter for a while now and this is one of the first models created during beta which was also printed.

The above print was made on a self-built work-in-progress Reprap Prusa Mendel, so please don't mind the low quality.
The model shows the terrain around 47.7303361, 12.881588.

I will put a website with a map based converter creating such STLs online within the next few days. Just some last testing necessary...

Download & print.

I sliced with Slic3r and it worked out quite well. Still my print has two little caves were none should be and a lot of small "bumps" are printed on top of ridges and peaks.

I am sure the print would look much more spectacular with exaggerated heights.

Hallo, this looks great, how is the progress of the software? Thanks

I am an earth science teacher and would like to have my students select sections of topo map data and print them to compare with the topo profiles that they draw of them

Hi I would like to be a beta tester.

How is the progress of your software?

Can i use data from openstreetmap?

At start we will support only SRTM terrain data. But since we use parts of the Marble project infrastructure a lot of map types should be supported soon (earth, moon, overlay of streets on top of terrain, climate maps). But I have no exact roadmap at the moment, first we are working towards an online beta version :)

hi, im very interested in your converter software. whats the name of it? can i test it?

At the moment we are in the final stage of an alpha version. Hope to make this available as a beta service within the next days. I will send you the link.

At the moment we are in final stage of alpha version, hope to make it available as beta soon. I will send you the link as soon as it's available. (Das Demo-Fleckerl ist übrigens rund um Bad Reichenhall)
