Print Thing TagSummary
A simple typewriter style keycap inspired by http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:417509 (which was too big to fit on my keyboard).
The big issue I've had with all the other cherry keycaps is that the stem won't fit on the switches without a ton of cutting and filing. In this design, the walls of the stem are so thin that the printer ignored them and just printed 4 posts which fit perfectly. Win.
The key in the picture is printed with ABS. I have printed it with PLA as well with good results. The ABS fits a little more snug on the switch, which may be due to shrinkage.
Instructions
100% fill
0.15mm layer thickness (adjust to your liking)
0.8mm shell thickness
I reduced the print speed to 40mm/s (down from 50) to help with the accuracy of the stem.
I also set the first layer thickness to 0.06 larger (down from 0.3) and the layer line width to 50% larger (down from 100%) than the rest of the layers. This helped with the detail in the letters, but wasn't really necessary for printing the blank keycap.
It might be worth noting that those default sizes are for my Ultimaker 2 as I don't know much about other kinds of printers.

Are there any settings that can help improve the letters accuracy? They seem to be too flattened on my prints.
I'd love to see a version in the customizer that allows changing of the text on the buttons and maybe also have a squarish one too. Also, the pic of the finished product has four sections to the cross and the file has one piece to it. What happened to the ring of material in the file?
I'm afraid I don't know what customizer you're referring to. I'm very new to sharing files on this site. Could you elaborate?
The walls of the stem are so thin that the printer ignored them. That was the only way we could get it to fit on the switch post correctly.
Some models are uploaded in a way that makes them customizable, like this one http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:725940
See on the side above the "Download this thing" button is the "open in customizer" button? It allows people to change certain values and make a custom version of the thing without having to do it all themselves. I don't know how to put a model in for that kind of thing, but it would be neat to be able to choose the text before downloading it so that people could essentially make models based on your design that they could use for every key on their board. O have a design for a keyboard I'm working on and just about everything but the switches are going to be able to be printed if I can get the right keycap model and customize all the keys. (stuff like having a "BILLY MAYS" key instead of caps lock and "ಠ_ಠ" instead of the printscreen button, among other changes)
That's neat that the model has an area ignored in the printing process.
EDIT - I found it. Apparently you use this tool to make a model customizable http://www.thingiverse.com/app:22
