Remote Driven Extruder, not a bowden
by blitz2190, published
Description
This is a very experimental remote driven extruder to get the speed of a bowden with the accuracy of a traditional extruder, i have not tested as of yet but everything assembled correclty in inventor assembly as shown so I'm putting this up for those who want a crack at it until i can get to my printer, also i lowered the motor mount and idler for the belt to give better clearance. most parts will need to be rotated and/or dropped to bed level. I've included all ipt's for inventor, to adapt this to another shaft you would need to change the little_gear insert and coupling all else would remain with a slight possibility of needing to enlarge the hole for the shaft to pass through in the extruder body if is much larger but remember the 608 only has a 8mm internal diamater so that would be the limit, the big gear is a massive file and I won't be uploading the ipt but it shouldn't be needed
EDIT- added a pic showing new belt clearance at full z height with the lowered belt position also puts the belt more inline with the x carriage on the bottom so less distortion meaning a smoother ride on the x-axis
EDIT 2- just realized the export on the stl's was in cm not mm so they where 10 times to small, new stls uploaded

view allthe only thing i never got around to printing was the extruder body, all the others print and work fine, my printer just lost its drivers and I'm just now getting back into 3d printing and fixing it, im hoping to have a video soon

the only additonal hardware is a 608 skate bearing and a vex robotics square shaft 12 inches long(might be able to pull one from an old printer if its the same size)
print one of everything and 2 couplings
assemble as seen in image if you can't see the insert, it goes in the bearing on the x-end to hold the sqaure shaft
as i don't know the height of all carriages the extruder has slotted holes for fine tuning the alignment i used gregs x-carraige in the design

Have you seen this? http://garyhodgson.com/reprap/2012/01/experimental-off-carriage-extruder-motor/http://garyhodgson.com/reprap/... I am working on a similar solution. I have swopped the two smooth rod with two hex rods, for a dual extruder setup.
actually I had from a topic on this forum from a long time ago and wondered why it never got done so i decided to take make my own and share it, dunno why it was never done it took me about a week in inventor
I think it is kind of important to mention where you have got the idea from, when you are this close to the origin.... http://garyhodgson.com/reprap/wp-content/uploads/2012/01/Prusa-Mendel-Off-Carriage-Extruder-PoC-MattRobertsCompactExtruder.pnghttp://garyhodgson.com/reprap/...
Here are a couple of screenshots. I have printed most of the parts. Need to make some adjustments to the x-ends, and the carriage.. :-) I will wait with posting the project until I have made some tests. I am afraid that I will introduce some x-wobble, if the hex-shafts are not perfectly aligned.... https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/55953222/Duohex%201.JPGhttps://dl.dropboxusercontent.... https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/55953222/Duohex%20X-carriage.JPGhttps://dl.dropboxusercontent....
interesting idea. However I can see the nut binding on the shaft as a problem. But certainly a concept worth developing.
what nut?, if your talking about the drive gear i have done a couple test print with that part before i went ahead with the design, i held the gear as tight as i could and spun the shaft while trying to slide it and it works great although as a precaution i would use some lithium grease to make it slide better

I'd love to hear if you got this working!
