Castle MakerBot is my Entry into the BotBling competition! Hope you Like it!

Bot Bling Design Challenge by Carmiac: thingiverse.com/thing:7784

I decided to do a Castle theme. Included in Castle MakerBot are four turrets, several coat of arms, medieval wall torches, stained glass rose window, and runic keypad for the Gen4 interface. I also couldn't resist putting a dragon in there, but that is Tbuser's design.

Most of this was designed in OpenScad. Originally it was designed in Sketchup, but then I learned OpenScad and started over and redesigned everything. The only thing that remains in Sketchup is the stained glass window, but I will work on moving that to OpenScad as well.

If you wish to poke around in any of the OpenScad files, I highly recommend you check out the Coat of Arms. It is parametric and you have a choice of 7 different logos to be placed in 3 different positions. I have uploaded some renditions here.

The Torches are made from LED Tealights! They flicker kind of like real fire. These torches were difficult to photograph in low light, but I did the best I could.

The castle turrets snap right on to the rod end caps on a thing-o-matic.

The stained glass rose window has some pieces printed in blue PLA, natural PLA, red ABS and black ABS.

I have intentions to add a few more things to this, if I have the time. There is just so much more I want to do.

Hope ya like it!

Update... added this video of me showing the various parts of the castle. Focus is a little off on some of the close ups and the stills on the left probably do the project more justice. I recommend turning down the volume too, the only noises are me being clumsy and banging into things. I guess I should have talked through some of it, but it is getting late and it probably would have made the video worse than it is! ;P

Instructions

Turret:

This is simple, just print. It should snap right on to the rod caps on top of any Thing-O-Matic.

Coat of Arms:

I have included an OpenScad file, that is parametric. You have a choice between 9 different logos in three different places on the coat of arms. Also there is an extra design for the RepRap Coat of Arms v2. The options for Logo placement are: Logo1(top left), Logo2(bottom right), Logo3 (Top Right, this one is different, in that the logo will not be a difference but extruded). Logo Options can be placed in any position and are listed here:

MakerBot - MakerBot M Logo!
Thing-O-Matic - My rendition of a Thing-O-Matic printer!
Cupcake - My rendition of a cupcake! (the dessert)
Unicorn - The Unicorn Logo!
RepRap - The words RepRap in their logo's font! (Tahoma)
RepRapDrop - The RepRap drop logo!
OSHW - The OpenSource Hardware Logo!

Make sure you download the OSHW-logo.dxf, Unicorn-Logo.dxf and reprap.stl to use the corresponding logos.

There is also an option to disable swords by adding Swords="none" and the module for Design 2 for RepRap (Because the reprap words can be hard to read when printed small) is CoA_RepRap();

Torch:

Print the torch, it comes in two pieces. You can attach the two pieces together with one m3 16mm socket cap bolt. Then, what I did was take apart an LED tealight (which you can get for a $1 each at many many stores). The tealights I got are kind of cool, because all the electronics that make it flicker are compacted into the LED itself. I wasn't expecting that. So, when I took my tealight apart, all that was in it was one CMOS style battery and one LED. Once you have a tealight apart, drop the battery and the LED into the Top of the Torch. Now, the larger hole on the mount part of the torch should fit snugly onto a socket head cap of any m3 bolt. And your done! Such SORCERY!

Stained Glass Window:

I printed the glass-frame.stl in black, glass-clear.stl in clear PLA, glass-blue.stl in Blue PLA, and glass-red.stl in fluorescent red ABS. After printing these items, snap them together, they should fit snugly without glue or cement.

I really wish I would have had more transparent PLA colors available for the window. If I did, I would have designed the window to take up an entire side of the Bot.

Runic-Stickers:

Print on sticker paper and stick to your interface buttons. Left to right in the PDF it goes, UP, DN (down), LT (Left), RT (Right), GO, NO, HI, and LO.

The Dragon Head Trophy was created by TBuser and can be gotten here:

Very well done sir.

ohhh im deferentially printing one of the shields for my brother

done deal .. just printede the reprap/open shield .. i like it

Now, to make the entire bot real without just accessorizing? Have a real castle bot? :-D

Congrats on winning the challenge!

Thanks! I had a ton of fun making this!

Very cool. Your understanding of how to make these things work is far greater than mine! I've not managed nearly so good a detail...

So who's going to build another castle and start a fude?

Thanks for the compliment!

You'll get the hang of it really soon I am sure. What really helped me originally was DaveD's configuration program called profilenator. But now I use ProfileMaker, which is a web based tool by MakerBlock, which is awesome and simpler to use.

Here is the link:

http://makerblock.com/profilem
aker/

It should crank you out a top notch profile in minutes.

It also helps to upgrade your bot, a stepper extruder is essential, whether it is the Mk6 from MakerBot (HIGHLY recommended) or one of the other varieties, this is key. Also the .40 mm nozzle doesn't hurt. I am still printing in 3mm
but as soon as I run out of filament (I still have 15 lbs or so left ) I am switching to the 1.75mm stuff. Also a level platform and raftless printing go a long way!

WOW! That is fantastic!! :-P

Must..pry...jaw...off...floor....

I love the turrets! Do they double as spool holders?

Wow, that is a fantastic idea! Where were you BEFORE I printed it? ;]

Yup, you win the holy crap award. Great job. :)

Hands down, too. That is insanely awesome... This is beyond bling and somewhere into makeover territory!

nice shields ^^
