Summary

Let your imagination run wild stacking squares. With essentially an infinite number of choices in the customizer you can be assured no one will have an object just like your's. By changing the dimensions you can make planters, trays, bud vases, pencil holders, bracelets, or drinking glasses. The simpler smaller objects make good demonstration pieces and will print quite quickly.

Update: Moved max layers from 200 to 800. Careful with the higher layers it could result in long renders. Also added a control to force the design to be hollow if you can't do it in your slicer.

Instructions

Run the customizer and choose your parameters and export the STL. Be careful to avoid large overhangs. It is quite possible to use the customizer to create something unprintable. When slicing specify no fill and no top layers. Once you print it, be sure to upload a photo. I'm curious to see what people end up with. I have several other vase customizers with variations on this theme. Check out the "Derived from" to see the other versions.

There is a new control called "Force Hollow". This will create a hollow STL for those who can't make the object hollow with their slicer software. Vase produces an STL with only a bottom. Bracelet produces an STL with no top or bottom. The walls are 2mm thick so this may or may not slice nicely depending on your nozzle diameter and layer width. Most should get at least two layers though. It is still best to make the object hollow using your slicing program (instead of the new option) since it will give you best control over the wall thicknesses.

With those settings OpenSCAD stays at 99% rendering for over 4 hours and still doesn't complete. Is there a big nono here? I was able to render at 100 layers but then the open spaces were visible between layers.

It will render in half the time if you don't force hollow and instead slice it hollow with your slicer. You'll be able to control the wall width too doing this which will give you more control over not having spaces between the layers. The render time should be directly proportional to layersdouble spiral (1,2)squares per layer*force hollow(1,2).

Thanks for the tip! I use Slic3r. Would the wall width be defined by the number of perimeters then?

Yup, the number of perimeters determines the wall thickness. Since you are making a vase, be sure to set bottom layers to how thick you want the bottom, zero infill, and no top layers. The force hollow vase makes 2 mm walls, so you'll want to go higher than that for your walls if you saw gaps on the customizer STL.

Hi - love your customizable design - I've created a small twisted cup and tall slim twisted vase using it. Would it be possible to make another customizable version where you can define where (height / layer) will be the "middle" section you can define the diameter for is located so you can then create asymethrical shapes as well? Even better if it would have two middle diameters with option to set their height / layer and diameter - that would make very nice looking vases. Also would be nice to have an option to define bottop / top "flat" lip so it will look more like vase (look at vase http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:37327http://www.thingiverse.com/thi... with top lip to see what I mean). Thank you!

Double Twisted Vase

Increasing the layers is easy so I did that. It now goes to 800. Extra curvature points would be cool. I'll have to look into the math for that. Right now the code solves a quadratic equation to make the edges pass through the point you select so that method won't work if I go larger. I'll give it some thinking and see what I can come up with.

How do I slice without the top layer?

I only use Slic3r, so I only know how to do there. With Slic3r, go to the print settings tab-->Layers and perimeters-->Horizontal shells-->Top. Set Top to 0. Then slice the model with slic3r (Export g-code on the Plater tab).

Does Slic3r play well with makerbots as an alternative to replicatorG?

You will still need to use replicatorG to feed the gcode to the bot. But you can use any modern slicer to create gcode, then load it up in repG and click build. Slic3r and kisslicer also have the ability to run a post processor like GPX http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:81425http://www.thingiverse.com/thi... then you can just copy the file to an SD card and print from that.

I figured out a way to have the customizer make hollow parts. It's still betterto use the slicing software to do it since it gives more control over the wall thicknesses, but if you'd like to try it I've implimented it on the polygon vase customizer here: http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:86502http://www.thingiverse.com/thi.... It is more complicated to implement it for the square customizers so that may take a week or two.

Polygon Vase, Cup, and Bracelet Generator

I have a Printrbot not a Makerbot so I'm not sure how to use Slic3r with a Makerbot. I did find with a search on Google that some people printing vases using RelicatorG, just stop the print before the top filled layer prints. Apparently with ReplicatorG you can't control top and bottom fills separately like you can on Slic3r. You'll find the vase looks just fine even with last layers omitted.
