Description

This is still a work in progress so be kind :)

Ive wanted to make one of these for a long time and finally got around to modeling it and printing. The model was printed at 1:4 on a ProJet SD 3000. I am not sure how it will come out on other machines but it looks good coming from the ProJet. Just a warning the "claws" are very fragile so be careful and print a few extra!

This is my first attempt so there will be changes in the near future:
-Claws are too thin, need to beef them up a bit
-Add built in battery compartment for LED lighting :)
-Work on spring mechanism for claws
-???

The STEP file is available here ( grabcad.com/library/portal-gun ). If you would like the SolidWorks model send me an email.

Enjoy!

Instructions

anyone print this on a reprap with slic3r support?

I'm gonna try soon!

I have made the SolidWorks version available for download. Enjoy!

Umm you mention emailing for the solidworks file but I'm not sure how to email you.

This is absolutely stunning! And at 1:4 scale, it is cute to boot! XD

Amazing what you can come up with with enough patience, although its depressing to see the really fine details and realize that I will likely never be able to afford such a nice 3D printer. You're printer costs more than the house I am getting ready to buy. :'(

I know what you mean, I just go lucky and work for a place with a 3D printer. There is always shapeways.com? you could print the whole thing for around $80.

I have listed this on my blog www.3dfuture.com.au - great project!

Thanks! Glad you like it!

Thanks for all the kind comments!

I have a new version printing as I type. I've added a battery compartment, 3mm LED holes, single body (instead of two halves) and new center beam for 1/2" OD - 1/16" acrylic tube. I need to order the LEDs, battery and a few other things but Ill post some new pictures when it is done sometime tomor
row! :-D

Amazing!

Good job!

And can we get a picture of the back?

Thanks!

I wish I had a 3D printer that could print with supports...

:'(

That's a wonderful model though!

this is really cool! hopefully this prints as well on an InVision. have you thought about EL wire? but that might be too bulky, since this is so tiny. I'd love a Solidworks file!

Thanks. I think the converter + battery would be too big. Good idea though, I love the look of EL wire :)

If you want the SolidWorks file send me and email and Ill send you the files.

awesome!

how much is a ProJet SD 3000 anyway?
and how much are materials? are they easy to get?

It was close to $63,000 so its not cheap by any means. As far as easy to get, I would have no idea?

Could you upload the whole gun as a single STL file?

Sure do you want the hollowed out version or the solid version?

WOW!!!!!!

This is really cool!!!!!

I have been looking for something like this for a while! :-D

This is a fantastic design!

Is this a single body in solidworks, multibody, or assembly?

The main body is a single part with multiple bodies and the claw is a single part and single body. Its a bit of a messy file but it works. Modeling the main body as a single part makes combining and splitting features easier. The SolidWorks file I used for printing is not the same as the STEP file I posted on GrabCAD.

All right, all right. Not have access to affordable SLS I've gotta figure out how to print this using additive methods and support.

You could print it through Shapeways using their frosted detail or frosted ultra detail. I believe thay are using ProJet SD 3000 and Projet HD 3000 printers as well.

Othewise Id be happy to help modify the model for additive printing?

This is straight-up incredible! Nicely done!!

Well done, robots! That's a very high quality print. What was it printed on?

Thanks! It was printed on a 3D Systems ProJet SD 3000.

The make is a lie! :-D

Joking aside, that is teh awesome.

Thanks, Glad you like it. I am new here and this is my first post so if you have any suggestions let me know!
