Low Fastener Mendel

Low Fastener Mendel by vik Jun 3, 2011

Description

This is not completely hashed out, and is slightly smaller than a standard Mendel. But it should allow a frame to be constructed from these vertex modules. I've made special vertices for the top of the frame for the X motor and idler as the carriage thingiverse.com/thing:9385 can now slide along the top bars.

The Y axis components (still being worked on but in the SCAD file) slide on the lower two bars, so mechanical requirements are simple. The sockets are parametric and will work with screws, bolts, glue or - my personal favourite - tape and a mallet.

With a bit of luck, the ARNIE string Z axis revival will allow a RepRap to be made without any threaded or steel rod in it at all.

Oh yeah. They're there now.

Instructions

Push 9mm extruded aluminium tubing into the sockets and join them together to make a Mendel frame. They should be quite sturdy, but one can always add superglue, self-tappers or epoxy when one is sure of the alignment.

Is the rod diameter adjustable as part of the parametric design? I am in the US and would prefer a 3/8" rod like this.. http://www.amazon.com/Aluminum...

Or maybe better yet.. a pack of 6x 1/4" tubes for $12.

To make it more epoxy friendly, you might consider putting little holes where you can, such that epoxy can be squirted into the cavity between the end of the rod/tube, and the end of the plastic. But, your tapered design is probably good enough as it is.

I dunno about motor mounts - motors can get quite hot - but glue holes are a good idea. I'll add them in.

Yeah for no fasteners!! I know it's easy to get fasteners at the hardware store, but not everywhere in the world. This style both reduces the cost by a little bit, and simply makes assembly that much easier.

I suppose you'll be coming up with appropriate motor mounts and the like which similarly don't require threaded rods and the like.

Way to go man!
