Bre Pettis OpenSCAD Medal by syvwlch Jun 3, 2011

Description

Quick little OpenSCAD scrip to generate a roman emperor style coin or medal from a bust, using Bre's head as an example.

The script is public domain, not Bre's head which I believe he still needs, from time to time. ;-)

UPDATE: Renosis printed one out!

UPDATE: Added another version that:
a. Raises the profile up on a one millimeter ledge to make sure it generates several layers in Skeinforge before it starts to fill in the top.
b. Recesses the profile into the coin/medal, with a raised edge all around.

That coin looks really cool.

Unfortunately, the second one I printed (the one without the "MakerBot Industries"). Didn't take to being sliced well. It really confused skeinforge for some reason. So, I think the only way to make it work would be to print vertically. Kind of like MaskedRetriever suggested. Of course this introd
uces a whole slew of problems.

Yes, that is what I said. In fact, that is why I printed it, because I wasn't sure it would come out at all. But I don't think it looks bad the way it is. I am going to print the new version now.

I think the bass relief might come out better printed vertically-- of course one would need to file off the bottom a bit to get good build platform stickage..

Instructions

Change the name of the STL file to match the bust you want to use, play with the sizing parameters if needed, hit F5 and if it looks good, hit F6 and export!

I need to dig up those nifty OpenSCAD letter scripts to add a motto to this fine medal. :-)

Thank you, it might need some improvements so it prints with more visible detail... but it's a nice little start. :-)
