Description

This adapter allows you to stack another MakerBot Filament Spool Holder by charlespax thingiverse.com/thing:7105

Instructions

Base and tube height and diameter can be adjusted in the OpenSCAD script to get a good fit. I made the base height a little thicker than is necessary, but the extra space is there in case you have Spool Housings thingiverse.com/thing:8762

This part seems to crack as easily as the spool holder that goes with it.

The copy of this that I printed for my makerbot is one of the most useful mods to the makerbot that I have done.

Thanks!

Update: New version uploaded that allows you to mount the spools upside down so that the filament unwinds counter clockwise. Doing this allows for less resistance in a more gentle curve when combined with my Filament guides http://www.thingiverse.com/thi... It also makes it easier to pop spools on/off the bot since you can leave the spool holder inside the spools.

I have the original version mounted on the right and the guides on the left. Is this not functionally the same as the inverted version mounted on the left?

Update: I tried it with 2 spools and housings and the spacing is good and it works well!

I just uploaded a new version with slightly different dimensions so that it snaps into the top of the spool holder for a better and more stable friction fit. I also added trapped nut slots to make it a little easier to get those annoyingly tiny m3 nuts on inside the tube.

Can't you test it by leaving the bottom holder empty and putting the spool on the top holder?

Hey, yeah I did try putting the spool on just the top one and it worked. Only a slight wobble, I need to adjust the diameter of the adapter a bit to get a tighter fit. The part I can't test is the clearance of the spool housings.

Awesome! People are going to need this.

Hmm, is that a hint at 2 material printing or what? Just because I've been saying that's the next step in the evolution.

Nice creative thinking!

:)
