Description

This variation on the Y axis bearing housing allows a 22mm 608Z "sk8er" bearing to be used on the Y axis drive shaft. This means the standard 8mm steel drive rod can be used but without the need to file a flat along its entire length. Alternatively, a threaded rod can be used, but attachment of gears using M8 nuts & washers is left as an exercise to the diligent researcher (I'm looking at you Graeme :).

Instructions

Print. Poke captive nut into oblong hole. Clamp onto Z axis strut using M5 bolt or grub screw passing through captive nut. Hold the other side in position on an M8 threaded support using M8 nuts and washers. Arrange Y axis so that the bearing is pushed into the housing and don't squash the bearing with the M8 nuts!

If you print it a little tight, warm it up to get the bearing in. If it's a little loose, just wrap the outer edge of the bearing in PTFE tape.

Absolutely brilliant work vik. I just finished printing off my first Y axis bearing holder and was extremely confused by how on earth I was going to fit a bearing into it and have it go smooth. This will save me so much time and effort. Plus it's very compatible with my BfB version 2 which I finally just got printing.

One question, I downloaded the cartesian bot collection of STL's(version 1.0.5 from memory) from the reprap site and it didn't have stuff like this in it. Is there anywhere where an updated file is kept. Or failing that I could collect all the great work you've been putting on thingiverse which updates the reprap and make a 1.0.6 so everyone immediately gets this stuff.

To be honest, most of the focus of the core team is hard at work developing the V2.0 "Mendel" design, so I'm just putting things up on Thingiverse at the moment. If you want to collate the updates, I would be delighted!

very nice. using ball bearings on the X/Y is a major upgrade for RepRap. rock.
