Thanks! I modified it a bit so that I could slip it onto an already running filament.
Twist the sponge about half turn, then use a sharp knife to cut halfway through the twisted side. It results in a spiral that can be wrapped around the filament without easily popping off.

Thanks! It's been working well for me as well. The quick release was a bit of an afterthought but I think it works great with no spring.

Go even more minimalist: Tear a strip off an oily rag and tie it around the filament a couple of times.

Remember to smell oily rag first for efficiency :)

Instructions

1) Cut small square of a sponge
2) Poke small hole with a toothpick or similar
3) Thread filament through before feeding into extruder.

I was feeling bad that I didn't put an option for a sponge holder in my filament drive setup. Now I see that it isn't necessary :) Thanks!
