Description
This was my prototype: thingiverse.com/thing:9187
Version 2 reduces plastic and print time and cleans up spacing. It works but is by no means long-term tested. My bot does not seem to have any issues with binding at the top like it used to. I am using only one of these things on the right side, the other side still has brass press-fit bearings.
The Z-Axis follower is designed to be inserted into one or both sides of the z-axis ToM where the press-fit bearing would go in-between the top and bottom z-axis pieces.
The goal was to make it fit inside the regular z-axis constraints and require minimal modification to the z-axis (now only 2 screw holes).
Original Sketchup file included for whatever modifications people want to make.

I am using 6 bearings and it may be overkill, but it seems to work well so I am going to leave it alone.
This uses 693 bearings. I ordered 693ZZ (3X8X4) bearings off eBay.
This will print slightly taller than the space between the top and bottom z-axis parts. This is on purpose to allow you to file or sand it down to fit your bot. The top z-axis should press down on the z-follower to help hold it in place.
You may need washers between the bearing and the plastic if your bearings don't spin freely.
In the future it would probably help to design some way to secure the plastic to the top of the z-axis and possibly the side.
You should also consider one of these other options:
