Helical drive coupling

Helical drive coupling by dmatsumoto Jun 20, 2011

Description

I needed a way to connect my stepper motor to ACME rod, so I figured that if I'm going to print one, I might as well see how well a helical coupling prints. It came out better than expected, but I can't claim anything about performance or longevity of the part.

Sorry guys, I wasn't clear on this one. I printed it with support and then removed it afterward with needle nose pliers.

Did you print it with support? I looked at the G code, and there seem to be rather big overhanging parts of the helix. With support enabled it should print OK.

I tried to print this on my Printrbot Simple but I must have the wrong settings in Cura where I sliced it.
When the printer got to the first spiral it started out OK, but then started reaching farther and farther and the plastic got stringy and started collapsing…..maybe I am using the wrong temperature for my PLA 1.75mm filament. Or I have some settings that are not correct for this type of printing.
Could you clarify the settings you used to print this?
Thanks

I didn't model this in OpenSCAD, so I have also included my Alibre Design 2011 part. If you need a specific motor shaft or rod diameter, just send me a message and I'll upload a file for you.
