Parametric 27 to 1 Gearset by garyhodgson Jun 20, 2011

Description

The gears are from mraiser's original (thing:9414), with a modified set of holder parts from tbuser (thing:9454) to make them thinner.

I include the (hacked up) openscad file, but would recommend looking at MakerBlock's cleaned up version (thing:9460).

Yeah, mine moves only ever so slightly when I waggle the large gear.

I guess there are two approaches to making it 1:27 - increase the power or reduce the friction.

The former will probably result in broken teeth and tears before bedtime. For the latter, one could try to introduce bearings at all the contacts - maybe one of the printable bearing designs that are
floating around would be sufficient. If I get time (hoho!) I may try printing a set of gears with sufficient gaps in the sockets to throw in some beads (or such).

It would probably help to have a slight gap between the faces of the gears - mine rub ever so slightly.

Just finished mine - and I can't turn it from the big gear. It would take WAY too much power.

Sadly not - mine's definitely a 27:1 setup, not 1:27 :) Would be very cool to be able to turn it the other way though.

Yay!!! I wonder, with as much torque and force that's created... could we great a grinder with something like this?

Yeah I was totally thinking it could power a grinder. My wife thought I was building a fishing reel.

I'm curious are you able to turn yours from the opposite side? ie. can you get it to turn by turning the slow gear? Mine requires too much force and basically ends up skipping gears. It would be cool if you could turn it that way because I was thinking you could then turn it into a generator wi
th some magnets and a coil of wire?
