Extending Gripper Toy (Kinda parametric) by Linkreincarnate Jun 21, 2011

Description

Derivative of a toy. Challenges the idea that nostalgia must be bought back from corporations...

I've tried to make this file parametric. The idea was to have the gripper and handle resize automatically depending on the dimensions of the arms. That kind of was implemented but you will have to play with some hard coded values to make it work properly. I could use some help with this if anyone is up to it. I'd like to make it snap together as well...

I was fiddling about with a new bar for this thing. Take a look at the picture. Basically, I thought it would use less plastic, and still serve the same purpose.

It's parametric, you can select the sizes, and the cutouts will auto adjust. Maybe you want to consider doing cutouts as you can make larger arms with the same amount of plastic, and less warpage.

It is on the to do list. A steven colbert head too...

You need to option it up with a boxing glove!

Instructions

Use 1.75 MM filament as hinges. (Unless you are editing the .scad file) Just melt the tip a bit and press it into a flat surface while it is still hot to create a pin. After it is in place melt the other side and repeat.

This should be easily printable on a makerbot provided the holes are small (the size they are in the stl should work fine) or your bridge settings are tuned.

You will have to mirror the gripper part depending on how you assemble the arms. You want the thin side of the gripper to be on the same side that the bar is. Ie if you are attaching it to the top arm, the top of the gripper should be thin. This part needs to be mirrored along 2 axises to make both gripper parts. If you are looking at it arranged as it is in the picture it would need to be mirrored along the x and z axis. I'm probably overcomplicating it though. Just look at the picture...

If you have an UP you are in luck. I have included the files I used to print this. Just use the .up3 files and you won't have to worry about mirroring at all...

Added WilliamAAdams' much more elegant parametric bar code under the title GripperBar. It is much easier to read and understand. I will be editing this some more to reduce the amount of plastic used and add quick snap in connectors...

Thanks. You think you could take a look at my code and help me put those nifty snap toghether pegs in? Preferably in a parametric fashion...
