Featured Thing!

Description

This is a small plane, with the wing frame printed and the body being a thing wooden stick.

The model has been inspired from 4p8.com/eric.brasseur/glider2.html

It does fly :-)

I'm guessing roughly 29 days. http://geekbeat.tv/3d-printed-...

Thats one way... or just print everything.

Would be an epic thing to design, just about every single part would be unique. But I suspect PLA, with strategic metal re-enforcement and a doped fabric skin would make quite an effective airframe.

Damnit. Its an idea that will have to go on the back burner. I have a couple of pilots who would b
e interested, but I don't have the space or the time :(
But the idea will now be clogging up my brain for weeks. Urgh.
Even worse, I now can get time on a big laser cutter and am thinking of how you could build a laser-cut plane... urgh!

That's a cool idea. Hmm.. :) Mainly build the joints, right? And then use carbon rods in between?

Instructions

The wing frame is covered with really light weight paper (silk paper bought in a book store for a dollar or two). The paper is attached to the wing frame using a glue stick. The two wings can be glued onto the stick using hot glue. I've taped two small coins in front to balance the plane. The point of balance should be in the middle of the wings.

There is a holder for a propeller (rotor-holder), but I haven't tested this yet.

I guess the frame could be printed also, but a wooden stick worked.

The wings are angled slightly to get lift, and are angle outwards to get better balance. The angle can be adjusted to what you find best.

Nice.

How long till someone goes mad and builds a geodesic frame, printed, aircraft? Maybe not big enough to sit in... not yet anyway.

I agree, very nice! Have you ever made other planes with silk? Its been years, but I remember getting the silk wet with hot water and using a glue we just called "doping" to attach it. The silk shrunk as it dried, giving you a smoother surface.

Ok, I didn't know that. This is my first plane ever... well except for paper planes :) :)
