I began learning 3D printing in December of 2016. Like most of us I searched the internet and YouTube for information on the hobby and while there are a lot of great presenters on the topic there weren't very many educational videos and info. So I set out to learn by using my first printer to build another printer and then another and then I broke down and bought my first Wanhao Duplicator i3 printer. This journey taught me the skills that I needed ie: Firmware programing, set-up, troubleshooting and the like. As I have with other hobbies I have had over the years I took what I learned and decided to create a channel on YouTube and a Facebook group that would help people with the same issues I faced when I started. Finding a good source of parts was also a challenge in Canada until I found Spool Canada. In February of 2017 Spool Canada opened their retail location in Calgary. Prior to that the owner had been operating as a mail order business. After that the owner and I became friends and I pitched my idea for a internet based show and asked if he would consider being a sponsor. He agreed and suggested that I do the show from his shop, all the pieces came together and in October 2017 we began The First Layer. As of today we have 63 episodes on YouTube @ www.youtube.com/c/thefirstlayer, and I will keep going as long as I can. My goal is to Entertain, Educate and Engage with the community and continue to grow. It is the audience that keeps me going and I look forward to seeing you on the show.
