I spent over 22 years in the IT industry primarily as. Network Architect, but after an injury and increasing boredom , I threw caution to the wind and joined the amazing world of non-profit Aerospace..Yes, I see the puzlesd looks... I started a non-profit space exploration advocacy group, pioneersofspace.org . oriented towards making space accessible and affordable. Primarily the site, launching on eclipse day, is a resource portal for open-source software and open-hardware following the cubesat standard, but focusing on travel, not orbit.
I am launching a 3U cubesat in April, 2018 as a testing platform for a bunch of new concepts, including several pico propulsion concepts which are within launch guidelines and can produce sufficient delta-v. The cube-probe is entirely hand made, even the magnetorques are hand wound.
So, as you guessed, the purpose of a 3d printer is space-craft prototyping. ABS or PLA will never fly, but keeping my eye on Full-Metal Desktop. Being able to print a cubesat frame with the bus built into it would cut down hardware and launch costs.
Anyone interested in helping out on printing spacecraft or any other area is free to contact me as I always welcome free labor :)
