Are you a patient? Is there a 3D-printable object on Thingiverse that might make your life a little easier? Message me a link to the Thingiverse object; I'll print it and send it to you. For free!
Calling all patient and clinical makers! In my second bedroom, I have a makerspace (3D printers, CNC mill, laser cutter/engraver, vinyl cutter, etc) and boxes of Raspberry Pi single-board computers, Arduino-compatible microcontrollers, and expansion boards (sensor, actuators, communicators, etc). I'm looking for collaborators! Are you a patient or a clinician with an idea for making something that improves healthcare in some way? Let's connect!
I've been shlepping my makerspace to healthcare conferences since 2017 (Health Information Makerspaces: Lessons From #HIMSS17). Everyone loves the idea of patients and clinicians co-designing and co-making solutions to healthcare problems. But our pop-up makerspace only lasts a couple of days. So I had an idea. I spend lots of time on Thingiverse anyway. Why not use a Thingiverse account to create a virtual makerspace for healthcare makers?
Tele-making! Between video-conferencing and the US mail (3D-printed functional prototypes are lightweight and inexpensive to ship back-and-forth). Plus, for the last year, I've been hosting healthcare-related events in social virtual reality via @AltspaceVR. It's kinda like group Skype, except we are apparently magically transported into a shared 3D virtual space. While these public events are part of my every-other-week Health Systems Chat meetup in social VR, private social VR events are easily and quickly arranged (and free!).
If your attending HIMSS19 in Orlando (2/11-2/15), stop by booth 450 (@OneviewHC) to discuss, and maybe even get a head start making a difference in healthcare (“Making” Innovation Happen at HIMSS19). Or show up at one of three scheduled Health Systems Chat events.
PS Check out my own healthcare maker project: @MrRIMP, a customizable, interactive robot for pediatricians and child life specialists.
P.S. I've got a bunch of more practical stuff to upload, but in the meantime I'm uploading stuff I give away at healthcare conferences (badges, pins, tiaras, yes, silly stuff! But they're great to share, sometimes in person and tweeted out as a selfie!)
