The free trial version should work just fine.
To connect the pieces together after printing, I usually use some sort of super glue with PLA (I don't bother with other materials). I've had the best results with Loctite Super Glue Ultra Gel Control. And then if you want to cover the seams, you can use a wood filer like: ELMER'S Probond Woodfiller and then sand it down and paint it.
