I can't upload design images anymore. Thingiverse says, "File image should be less than 500KB"... WTF?
How long has this been a thing? 500K is barely larger than a thumbnail.
I don't upload designs unless I can show I've printed them myself.
This is some bullshit.
I don't care if files are resized, but I'm not going to do it. If I have to resize every photo before uploading, it's hardly worth uploading any photos.
Thingiverse resizes images to at largest 1024x1024 after upload. Images higher than this resolution do not exist on this site, at all. I understand it can seem a bit "thumbnail-size" in modern era, but it is what it is.
JPEG at highest quality is about 1.5bit per pixel. A 4:3 image with longest side at 1024, comes out to be 150KB, a 3:2 even less. It's an inconvenience, but you do have an almost 4-fold margin, so you can fit in without quality loss.
I noticed the same thing. No big deal. Images over 500K are typically way bigger than Thingiverse can show anyway. For a picture taken from my phone, if I reduce it to 33% of its original size, it's less than 500K and still bigger than Thingiverse can display.
