My Cura Settings for the Monoprice Maker Ultimate

These settings are to help people this model use the latest version of Cura.

Firstly, you're going to want to make a custom printer profile in Cura. All you really need to make sure is that the bed dimensions are correct, along with the filament and nozzle size, and have heated bed checked.

You'll need to add your own start/stop GCODE. I copied those from the custom version of Cura that comes with the printer.

I'll make it easy for you though, this is what you need to add to the machine settings...

;Sliced at: {day} {date} {time}
G21 ;metric values
G90 ;absolute positioning
M82 ;set extruder to absolute mode
M107 ;start with the fan off
G28 X0 Y0 ;move X/Y to min endstops
G28 Z0 ;move Z to min endstops
G1 Z15.0 F{travel_speed} ;move the platform down 15mm
G92 E0 ;zero the extruded length
G1 F140 E30 ;extrude 3mm of feed stock
G1 X20 Y0 F140 E30
G92 E0 ;zero the extruded length again
G1 F{travel_speed}
M117 Printing...

;End GCode
M104 S0 ;extruder heater off
M140 S0 ;heated bed heater off (if you have it)
G91 ;relative positioning
G1 E-1 F300 ;retract the filament a bit before lifting the nozzle, to release some of the pressure
G1 Z+0.5 E-5 X-20 Y-20 F{travel_speed} ;move Z up a bit and retract filament even more
G28 X0 Y0
G1 Z160 ;move X/Y to min endstops, so the head is out of the way
M84 ;steppers off
G90 ;absolute positioning

And finally, I've included a screenshot of my Cura printing settings. Obviously, you can tweak some of these like print speed or temperature, layer height, etc. The raft settings are the actual important part, if you print with a raft these will be the best settings for the raft to print successfully. It's a pretty good raft, relatively thin, easy to lift and easy to take off. The stock Cura raft setting outright failed for me, but these raft settings work perfectly on this printer.

These might not be the fastest settings, but for me, they seem to be a good middle ground of the printers capabilities. You could probably more than double the travel speed, and even print 50% faster, but that would stress the machine and may cause issues, so I think these settings are good for quality and longevity.

With all of these settings input into Cura, you should be printing perfectly fine with the latest version of Cura.

Do you know where I can find Cura?

Monoprice doesn't have it on their website anymore...

Any idea how to change the height the Z axis will move to after a print? Moving it all the way to the lowest stop seems to be too much, especially when I'm only printing things of 40-50 layers. Is there a gcode value I can adjust depending on the height of the model I'm printing? The sample files included on the SD card have this kind of function where the build plate seems to move down only 5-10mm from the top of the print.

No matter what I can't seem to make the extruder fan turn off. Is there something I'm missing? I've unchecked the box in Cura but that does not seem to matter. Is that a problem with the stock firmware? I'm still using 3.01.

My upper fan cooling the extruder runs always, the lower fan to cool the part starts after the first layer. All 3 of the stock fans failed me (one stopped, two were extremely noisy) within the first month. I bought higher CFM replacements that work well.

Thank you. I just upgraded to Cura 3.1 after running the Wanhao distribution (16.021) and I have to say it wasn't a painful as I thought it would be. I believe I'm getting better prints and with the ability to adjust the Horizontal Expansion factor I'm getting more dimensional accuracy control. No more fuding my models to fit parts :)

Thank you for sharing!

Worked! Thank you!

I've since made a lot more changes and tweaks, but these might also be down to my specific machine, as no two machine will have the same exact settings or be in the same exact environment. But this guide is definitely a good baseline state to get it printing.

It was a good start for me to materialize "something" :) Trying to mess with the settings now ;)

Thanks for sharing!

were you able to read it? oddly for me as soon as I posted it, it says "This comment is currently flagged for moderation." Some kind of glitch in the system.

When I go directly to your comment I see the same thing, but it shows up readable in my dashboard feed.

Well I see you use the Select Mini, I'm not sure if all the settings would be the same when it comes to the start/stop GCODE, and especially when it comes to print/travel speed, but the raft settings should be good for any printer.

I have a couple Monoprice Ultimates now, I forgot to update my profile. Thanks for the reminder!
