Since my old direct Drive Extruder was too weak for some Materials, I needed a solution with a gearbox.
Body printed on a Zortrax (support material was way easier to remove), the rest (green) on my MendelMax2.5
This extruder works excellent, but you have to consider 2-3 things before printing / building:
- try to get slicer settings for the support material that support everything BUT the pockets for the spring tighteners. It is quite a hustle to get the support material out...
- Check how far the flattened surface on the stepper motor axis reaches back. Mine ended 5mm too early, so I used an inverted Gear to be able to mount it properly. Now I can even use longer M3 screws ;)
- Another option was to get 4-6 more washers between the big gear and the first bearing, but the threads of my M8 screw reached quite far back, too close to the threaded hob for my taste
You can find the mirrored gear and the mount (source available) in my profile as well under "designs".
