All in all, a success, although I do have a problem with the sensor underestimating values, as compared to my caliper. I'd appreciate it if anyone has any comments/recommendations regarding this.

I did not build the PCB myself; I ordered it, and it arrived quickly.

Also worth noting is that my printer uses an early-revision Mini-RAMBO board, which lacks GPIO pin headers, and has a smaller pitch than newer boards. I decided on directly soldering the analog pin in place with kynar wire. Power could however be directly used from adjacent pins without soldering.

I also needed to manually compile the Lulzbot Mini customized version of the MARLIN firmware, the code to which is available here:

Note that the Lulzbot Mini branch is called FoxGlove, and what you need to do is to simply remove the comment enabling FILAMENT_SENSOR in Configuration.h.


I just changed the software to accommodate my calibration rod. Obviously it was a bit more than tweaking because my sensor also did a underestimation of the width but that was because the calibration rod was not exactly 1.7mm.

Thingiverse parts and kits

What are your thoughts on the sensor? Are you getting better print quality? I've been thinking of getting one, but there are mixed reviews on the internet.

Hello Penis! After attaching the sensor more firmly to the toolhead by making a little interlock (http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:1536790) I find that the sensor does the trick. I've not got any poor-quality filament to try it out on, but so far it's saved me from doing manual caliper measurements.
As for quality of prints, I've not seen much difference; I've not really had an issue with quality prior to the sensor.
