What a lovely idea, and such a great design. Thank you @muzzle64.
To make the embossed text, I just created an image with the text in black on a white background (using Gimp, but any image editor would work) and then imported it into Simplify3D using the very cool Convert Image to 3D Add-on, with the lid already in the design. I then only needed to increase the Z axis position of the text until the bottom of it disappeared into the underside of the top of the lid - making the text stick out of the top.
This article was very helpful: https://forum.simplify3d.com/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=2572
I used Astroprint to slice (I believe it uses Cura) and it automatically added supports for both the stocking and the lid.
For the stocking, the supports really helped... I have pretty good bed adhesion, but the angle of the stocking combined with the angle of the string hole makes for quite a steep overhang.
For the lid, I had to print it top-upwards, because of the embossed text, so supports inside the lid were necessary also.
Btw I just love how well the Astroprint slicer does supports - they are beautifully thin, come off without leaving a mark, and use very little extra filament. By contrast the supports that FlashPrint (default slicer offered for FlashForge gear) produces horrible supports: rock solid, impossible to detach from the bed, and hard to detach cleanly.
