I built one of these. I fabricated a custom metal housing that attaches to the back of the IKEA frame, and replaced the glass with a piece of Museum Glass from Hobby Lobby. I also incorporated RGB LEDs and a WiFi compatible controller box, so I can remotely turn on, and change the color of the LEDs. I had to splice in some diodes to maintain a consistent 12v for the motor, even as the voltage dropped to produce the various colors in the LEDs. I mounted all the gears on a piece of sign white acrylic with embedded heat set threaded inserts. The lights are mounted around the perimeter, behind the acrylic. This provides nice, even lighting without any hot spots.
First photo is from when I was first laying out the gears for spacing purposes. More photos to come.
