I've been a maker and modeller for many years and so embraced 3D printing as it became 'consumer' technology. I initially bought a low-cost printer and had a disaster which ultimately ended up with me returning it under warranty. Long pause. Then I decided to make the investment in the Ultimaker 2+ - and I've never looked back.
It didn't take me long to see that design is the key to success in 3D printing and I've spent the last 18 months re-developing my engineering design skills (it's 30+ years since I did 'Metalwork' at school!) and now, instead of just putting kits together, I'm actually designing them.
My main interest area is in model railways in N, OO and O scales. As my main modelling scale is N scale, I recognise the limitations of 3D printing for trains as the bodyshells are typically too thin for the consumer printers. On the other hand, scenery, buildings, and related items are perfect subjects!
