Iron Giant

My friend's son loves Iron Giant. They asked me to make him one. I found this model on GrabCad (https://grabcad.com/library/iron-giant-1) and modified to it be printable. with articulating arms and head and waist.

NOTE: I FORGOT THE SHOULDERS. They have been added now. I also uplaoded models that are oriented properly to print as I feel is best.

Parts:
Head
Upper torso front
upper torso back
lower torso
hip (x2)
left leg
right leg
fore arms
upper arm (x2)
shoulder pin (x4)

Printing:
Orientation of the prints is important. The upper arm and legs in particular should to be printed laying down to get the greatest strength. Then legs have supports in the model that work pretty well but do leave some scarring (sorry).

Assembly:
You will need some glue (super glue works great). Clean the parts well before assembly. I included supports in many of the models. where holes are printed vertically I added supports that will need to be punched out with a screw driver or pried out with pliers. Many of the supports will pull right off, but you may want to clean up the edges with a razor.

arm assembly:
to assemble an arm you need a shoulder, shoulder pins (x2), upper arm, and lower arm. after cleaning up the prints pin the shoulder to the fat end of the upper arm. You may need to sand the pin down. DO NOT FORCE THE PIN! It will break the should (i speak from experience)
after pushing in the pin I put a few drops of super glue on the outside ends of the pin to glue the pin to the shoulder piece. If you use too much glue you could immobilize the joint.
Then pin the lower arm to the upper arm. the pins are long for the elbow joint. I carefully used a razor to cut off the extra material. Then glued the outside ends of the pin to the lower arm piece. Again not too much.

waist assembly:
You need the 'lower torso' and two 'hips'. Before you glue these together do a test fit. You may need to shave of the tip of the hip so they can both fit flush against the...crotch...of the lower torso. Once you are sure they fit flush glue them well. Especially the the interface between the hip and the crotch. The one you made flush. This is a weak point.

Torso assembly:
The Head arms and waist will all fit into the Upper torso pieces. DO A DRY FIT FIRST! make sure the joints all rotate well. Clean off the joints where necessary. I also had to clean up the interface between the two upper torso parts to get a good clean seam between them.
Once you are comfortable with the fit, glue it up. Be sure to keep glue away from joints.

Leg assembly:
Do a dry fit. Alignment is crucial if you want it to stand on it's own two feet. Then glue them up.

You are Done! Enjoy

The model resembles the baby groots appearance in the trailers of the movie.
I recommend using the high detail version to capture all the details i put on. But if your slicer freezes/crashes, use low detail version, as the high detail version has several million polygons and requires more RAM/computing power to be sliced. There are 2 versions of the model, one with brim and one without brim. Use the version with the brim for better adhesion. You will have to remove the brim after print to assemble it. Last thing: The model may be rotated once imported. Thats because Zbrush takes Y-coordinate to be the up-direction. Don't forget it to rotate by 90 as in the photos. Happy printing.
Post update: Uploaded a non-separated version as some users wanted (height 15cm, untested, should be printed fine).

The FlashForge Finder is compatible with 1.75 mm PLA filament. If you happen to have PLA spools that don't fit inside the build-in filament casing, then this external spool holder makes it easy to fit them on your Finder.

The holder's axle is hollow to accommodate one or more units of the Universal Filament Filter and Lubricator. The end of the axle has a thread that fits the corresponding screw cap. We recommend using this small filter/lubricator to keep the filament clean before it enters the extruder.

Please note that when using this external holder, the filament bypasses the build-in filament detection switch. Therefore the Finder won't be able to sense when the spool runs out of filament and pause the 3D-print. If you use external spools you will need to turn of the filament sensing feature under the settings menu on the machines touchscreen display.

Also included in this thing are pre-sliced ready-to-use .gx files you can copy to a USB stick and print directly on the Finder. Download the file Pre-sliced .gx-files ready-to-print files for FlashForge Finder.zip which contains these files.

Don´t worry, we got your back! We designed a spool-holder and a filament guide-tube-holder with a "snap-in" compartment for the universal dust filter (http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:492067) to top things off.

Both the spool-holder and filament-guide-tube-holder will snap in place on top of the MakerBot Mini plate. You can slide both parts left and right to best fit the spool size you want to use.

To remove them, give them a push upwards and they should come off without any problems. You can use it together with the universal dust-filter or without, anything goes.

It is the T-Rex Skull but I ran the files through MeshLab and reduced the polygon counts to between 500-1000 to create the Lowpoly-Rex while still retaining the basic necessary details.

This was printed at 0.15mm layer height and 10% infill with Gold and White PLA on my MakerGear M2. Printed at 50% scale and shown compared to the original file. Printed without supports.
