Catch More Fish

An automatic hook setter for a standard ice fishing rod.

This device dramatically increases your hookup rate, by setting the hook automatically when the fish takes the bait.

It's also safer for fish than conventional means if you're practicing catch and release as it doesn't give the fish the chance to swallow the hook, you'll get more hookups in the mouth.

Once triggered, you lift the rod out of the holder and you have a conventional rod and reel to bring in your fish.

The hook setting process is, the fish tugs on the bait, pulling the line
which releases the zigzag catch at the end of the rod. The rod which was spring loaded by being bent, now goes straight, pulling on the line at speed and setting the hook.

This thing makes use of the wonderful Plastic T-Slot by ProtoParadigm for the legs.

Some features:

Collapsable with quick release clamps, so easy to transport

Will work with the reel handle on either side of the rod.

Tested, it really does work.

The catch can also be used for shore fishing with a regular rod
and rod holder.

Very cheap to replicate !

I highly recommend combining this with "Fish-On Now!" http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:53840 so that you know when a fish has been caught and to avoid tiring the fish.

WARNING / DISCLAIMER: Do not place your face over this device, if it goes off accidently or a fish comes along whilst setting up you could injure your face or eyes. Also you can break your rod if apply too much tension. Use at your own risk.

Also, check your local regulations to see if automatic hook setters are allowed. To my knowledge most do, but Ontario and Minnesota do not.

Requirements:
2 x 6-32 Nut
2 x 6-32 x 2 inch countersunk machine screw
2ft fishing line >= 8lb test

Fish-On NOW !

A fish alerting device for Ice Fishing with Tip Ups and automatic hook set systems.

Ideal for bite notification when fishing during the day (loud buzzer) and at night (high brightness LED).

You know the feeling, you're in the ice hut but you can't see your tip-up outside, or you are monitoring a few tip-ups and go to set a line and don't notice a tip-up has flagged. This device solves these issues and also enables you to fish at night.

It will work with most tip-ups that have a spring loaded rod with a flag.

It's simple, consisting of a mercury level switch, buzzer, led, switch, resistor and battery and costs just under $9 to make.

To use, point "Fish-On Now!" down and push the switch forward to switch on. Then when it moves above level, it will buzz and light the LED. Flick the switch off to shut it up whilst setting your tip-ups.

Consult your own regulations for permitted use (I don't know of any that don't allow it).

Note: The automatic hook setter shown also in this picture is available in a newer version at: http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:77050

Aurora Monitor V2

We're approaching Solar Maximum and chances of seeing the Aurora Borealis / Northern Lights are increasing worldwide.

Seeing the aurora is usually difficult, due to a lack of accurate information specific for your location. Add poor locations, light polluted skies, clouds and sometimes only a 30 min window of opportunity..., it can be like finding a needle in a haystack.

Many think Auroras are limited to the Arctic. But, unless you live at the equator (and it's even seen there occasionally), you too can see it if you're in the right place at the right time.

The aurora monitor is a technology I've been using for a long time to take photographs of the aurora (attached). I've updated this technology for Thingiverse and made it a stand alone Arduino based unit which you setup for your location.

An RGB Led indicates if there's an aurora active for your location with 30-60min advance warning. The strength of the storm is indicated by the auroral color of the Led. Accuracy is around 95%.

A Liquid Crystal Display further details the information and the time you should expect to see the Aurora.

Detailed information can be Tweeted too. Here's the feed for my location: https://twitter.com/AuroraAdec)

MK8/MK7 Nozzle Cleaning Script

Request: Because this is a script and not an object, if you use it, please take the time to make it a derivative, click on "I Made One". Thanks!

The brass nozzle on your MK8/MK7 stepstruder gets charred ABS on it over time.

Not only is this ugly, but if the deposit is around the nozzle output area, it can affect your printing too.

Clean up your nozzles with this handy script. The script prints a cube with a nozzle shaped indentation in, and then it slowly buries the hot nozzle inside.

Allow the nozzle to cool, then remove with pliers for a shiny clean nozzle.

Credit goes to Crazy Jaw for the original idea in his post: "Possibly brilliant (or terrible) way to clean an extruder nozzle" on the makerbot forum.

Disclaimer: Using this technique puts some force on your bot's mechanics. I've encountered no issues myself with this technique. If it's so stuck on you're risking damaging your bot, then you can preheat your bot to release the bond. Use at your own risk.

Full height 3.5 inch drives are becoming increasingly difficult to source, and some slot in drive bays (e.g. Drobo) can allow a wobble which can put strain on the drive connector over time, when a 3/4 height drive is used. This makes the Drobo or drive prone to serious damage.

This solves that problem, with an adaptor that fits on top to make the drive full height.

If there's not enough space around the drive for cooling, you may have to create holes in this design for cooling.

All are parametric.

We were also commonly using the squirrel and owl that can be found on Thingiverse.

10mm Calibration Cube - Quick to print thin cube (used to adjust fill during acceleration)

Calibration Cone - Used to check print quality versus speed and ringing

Calibration Cylinder - Used to check ringing and small movements

SkipTest - Used to check filament skipping in acute angles

This one is a terminator, with a bolt hole for attaching to a plate, or clothing.

ABS isn't that strong, an acetone wipe will help, but don't rely on this for anything critical or safety related. Use at your own risk.
