I am a Purdue University computer scientist who has been addled by a costly 3D printing addiction since 2014.
I have designed and built my own 3D printer based on the Taz 5. Most of my designs on Thingverse are modifications I made to the Taz 5 design.
Originally I Intended to just build a copy of the Taz 5, but after deciding I needed additional capability, I added bed self-leveling and triple extrusion capability. Self-leveling was accomplished through adding a capacitive sensor. The triple extrusion required me to design a drop-in replacement for the extruder mount plate that mounts two new hotends.
I've also redisigned parts for enhanced strength and altered the firmware to give better feedback on the sensors. This allowed me to add an emergency stop capability to stop head crashes. I now run a custom Taz based printer with a custom version of Marlin and I even have my own fork of Slic3r.
