You lose a lot of Z-height doing that way, huh?

You can gain most of the Z height back using a different design for the X carriage. I had already done a rebuild with a different design as described here: http://moosteria.blogspot.com/2015/08/the-xz-rebuild.html using the design outlined here: http://forums.reprap.org/read.php?406,512329,534498#msg-534498. This allows you to move the motor up a bit (though the pictures on both links show it in the lower position).

Can you make a version that fits a 40mm hole? The carriage on my printer has a 40mm hole in the middle, and no screw holes for mounting.
