If you're one of those people who like electronics, then you know how frustrating it can be when you need to hold a PCB for soldering a component.

That was my case when I decided to make a stand PCB. First I was looking at what was available in the market (Weller by example), in order to have some reference on which to base my design. Finally, I decided on a type of support that allows to turn the PCB in order to be able to have easy access to both sides of it.

The hardest part was to design the clamping mechanism. In the end I think I found a good solution, based on three springs that allow the PCB firmly secure but at the same time release with little effort, to rotate if necessary.

4x M3 Nuts
4x M3 Bolts of 25 mm

1x M3 Nut
1x M3 Nut with auto-lock
1x M3 Bolt of 25 mm
1x Spring of 0,8 mm Wire diameter x 12mm Length x 13 mm inside diameter aprox.

5x M3 Nuts with auto-lock
4x M3 Bolts of 20 mm
1x M3 Bolt of 25 mm
1x M3 Washer
2x Springs of 0,35 mm Wire diameter x 12 mm Length x 8 mm inside diameter aprox.
1x Spring of 1,5 mm Wire diameter x 36 Length x 14 mm inside diameter aprox.

The RODS I am using in this unit are recycled from an inkjet printer.
You need two of 8 mm of diameter by 400 mm of length.

Also I am making some type of video tutorial to do more easy the steps needed to assembling this thing ;)

By doing this project you can learn to use software like: FreeCAD, InkScape, KiCAD, Cura, Slicer, Repetier.


The main objective is learn to use 3D design software and how students can be able to make their own Tools, also to recycle non used material (be green student!)


This project can be carried out by any enthusiast.

It is a relative question but if the teacher only make use the main features of the software, they could be able to do this thing/project in lest than some hours.


If they only want to do this project, they only must to know how to print this thing in a 3D printer!

Why not flush mount the lower rod-holders? You have them slide in with the nut, but you could've made it a tiny bit shorter and then recessed it so it fit in nicely... Also, why not recess the nuts / etc.. for the other parts?

Otherwise it looks like a decent copy of the Weller PCB Holder - I'll probably make this as soon as I get a printer.


Is there any chance for posting the step files?
I would like to make some modifications and optimize it for my printer. Also would like to remove the groves so, no support is needed.
And would like to reduce the thickness as well. So, quite a few modifications. It would be ideal if step files are available.

I like the idea how you designed the insertable nut-holder plugs. I'll steal that shamelessly for some projects of my own... ;)

You can buy a clamp just like this one for $12 on Amazon. I like the use of the rods in braincodec's design, but for the cost of the parts it may be a wash to buy the Amazon version.

Hi Joinc, thanks for comment and for the link I like the rods system too and maybe the more important thing about my design is on the right hand mechanism.

Yes, obiously is possible to buy a clamp, a very cheap clamp, but the model I designed is comparable to this one:


and my design (clamp mechanims) is better in my opinion and as you can see the price is about 61,6' USD$ more tax & shipping.

Moreover I made mine with recycled parts mainly so the price for me was not a problem and the better thing I'am maker!! so I prefer to do my own tools if it is possible, you can modify, adapt to your needed, etc.

In any case the clamp you show is really cheap and for many people will be enough.

Hi phil123456! In my case the rods are from an unused inkjet printer (Recycling!) but you can found 8mm rods in many sites on internet:

I can't find my local store.

as you can see it has an outer diameter of 16mm, wire diameter of 1.5mm and a free length of 45mm, maybe you must cut a little so we need 36mm of length aprox.

You must keep in mind that it is not 100% obligatory to use the same measures, you have certain margins.

For example, the big spring for the right hand is the same you can found in this fitness device: https://es.wallapop.com/item/tensores-de-manos-13769569

You also can found the springs on an old inkjet printer, etc.

You can also find this type of springs (the big one to the right hand) in many shops in 1 meter strips.. You will have to cut it to the necessary measure.

Last month I ordered some boards from PCBGOGO and I was amazed about the quality and service with competitive price.
You could use them if you have boards to make.

Too bad... It doesn't print on a printrbot simple metal because the legs are too large :-(

Hi sinclairfr, but the PCB Holder is a very good thing. Maybe you want to say your printer don't have the needed dimensions, sorry for that. Leg dimensions are about 15,5cm x 16,5cm so in many printers the bed dimensions are about 20cmx20cmx20cm o maybe more.

If you want you could split the leg and print in two parts which you could assembly with some type of nuts.

Or if you want you can apply a little SCALE before you print this thing (Warning! Scale all the parts by the same factor)

I would be awesome if you would list what screws and road you used, and the size of the springs and where you use the springs
