Toothed belts are normally used for synchrous timing and non slip, how will you ensure the wire cables do not slip on the stepper drive pullies for example??

To make them not slip, you mount a 'drum' or cylinder on the stepper that has a radial (not longitudinal) hole in it. Then you thread the wire through the hole and wrap the wire around the drum on either side. This will enable no slipping/backlash using a wire to drive pulleys.

There are even examples out there of just wrapping the wire around a threaded rod and not slipping.

that was the first thing that came to my mind also.

and this look more like CoreXY type of setup then Ultimaker type setup.
