As I was pricing rotary encoders, I realized that I could fabricate a rudimentary encoder/tachometer using just a 3D printer, magnets, and Hall Effect sensors (which detect magnetic field). See this hastily made YouTube.

This customizer makes the disc for basically any magnets and motor you have around.

Are the hall effect sensors directional?
If so something like this would work for a single sensor to determine direction...
Clockwise put 6 sensors North facing sensor, S facing sensor, N, N, S, S.
(I know you already know this... I just wanted to look smart)
Then any of these patterns determine clockwise:

Unfortunately not -- they just trigger when the magnetic field is above a certain threshold. The only polarity issue I had was that they seem to like to trigger for one polarity more than the other.

Could you produce similar results with a reed switch?

Provided it can switch fast enough, I don't see why not.
