This is brilliant. How on earth did you make the lattice in sketchup?

Draw a closed shape on the surface of an object and use the Push/Pull tool to punch the shaped-hole through. Make sure the opposite side edge is accessible so you can 'snap' the hole to the other surface.

For the zones near the sockets it's better to type in a depth than punch all the way through. The model gets messy in transition areas from internal volume to holes and back again.

SketchUp doesn't have the support for proper geometric boolean operations.

Hey andrew think you could do a "turn" piece? My son has lost only 1 of the turns and now the train de-rails :). Trade you some laser cutting stuff :)

A few more parts like this, and every 3 year old boy is going to want a Makerbot.

That is a SMART design addition.
