I made a Christmas card called "family star wars" where a star wars fanboy kept replacing a his sisters rainbow unicorn star on the xmas tree with a deathstar, then I thought, hey I could actually make one of those on the laser cutter at the hackerspace and I set about making the design.
After a few trial runs you now have the latest iteration.
There is a lot of etching because of the hatching which was exploded so it was accepted by our laser cutter. Make sure the cut outs are there for the mounts (4 pairs) these are the only cuts inside the deathstar's outer circle cut. The mounts have a 3mm hole on them so a piece of fencing wire can be threaded through for extra support. Check the order of the etches/ cuts
Do all etching first then cut the small items that may blow out and collect before doing the outer cuts out out the deathstar last. I found it best to sand the laser cut burn off the end of the mounts before glueing in place (the rectangle black /brown marks are visually distracting and not at all like the deathstar's patterns).
I have now sured up the mounting as I had the thin mounts squash when in my back pack
