This is a spindle for the Home Depot cord reel. With some slight modification to the reel frame, it will hold a 5lb spool such as the one sold by UltiMachine.
This spindle has very low friction. I uploaded the original design and a version 2 design of the bottom piece that I thought would use less plastic. I checked the gcode generated for version 2 and it looks like it uses more plastic then version 1 using 25% fill. I have not yet printed the version 2 design. So let me know how it works if you decide to print it.

You have to remove the crank from the Home Depot cord reel by cutting or pinching the plastic opposite the crank. Then carefully stretch the frame and slide out the spool that it comes with. You have to cut off both of the sleeves sticking out on the inside of the frame. In a photo I show one of them removed. Now print one of the bottom, one of the top, and one bolt. The bolt was created using the great libraries from things http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:9095 and http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:8796.
For the cord reel check Home Depot for a Bayco 150 ft. 16/3 Cord Reel

I just printed the V2 spindle on my Solidoodle and it worked fine.  The spool alone weighed in at 80g of ABS and was one of the heftier things I've printed so far.  The overall design works great though.  I was really surprised at how well the threads in the thumbscrew turned out - with absolutely no finishing required.

can you post SCAD files? I bought the reel, printed the 2 smaller pieces, then realized the spindle botom won't fit in my TOM! I'd like to cut it into 2 pieces.

Check out the derivative here:

This is awesome!

(I don't undertand how I managed to miss it)

Similar to my setup. Yours is much cleaner looking than mine. Good work!
