Videos Using the 3D printed Prosthesis arm thermoformed


All parents and children were informed about the research study and signed a parental permission. For Children 3 to 16, an assent was explained by the principal investigator and signed by the children and their parents. Written informed consent from the parents was obtained in order to publish the images and videos shown in the research study and investigation. Futhermore, detailed safety guidelines were given to parents regarding the use and care of the prosthetic arm.

Where can I get this skin type of filament?

Awesome design! Its printing like a champ so far. Just one question: The finger sizes and hinges look to be a lot smaller than the palm and wrist pins. Am I missing something?

I have troubles slicing the fingers with Simplify3D.
It slices only the internal structure, see the picture here:

I have a 0.4mm nozzle. If I resize the model to 200%, then it slices fine.
How thick is the missing finger "skin" part? My best guess is it would be ok, if this could be thickened? However I'm not sure how it affects the flexibility...

Hi Christian,

I'm currently in Ghana helping to kickstart a new e-NABLE chapter. It's been an amazing experience so far and we have learned a ton. Two important lessons we've learned are 1) Recipients need arms, not hands and 2) They want arms that look natural. In that spirit, I think this new design a perfect fit for this region. The problem is that I have no experience with printing flexible filaments. I brought a PLA-based Flexy hand, which is what every recipient is gravitating to here.

Can you recommend a mid-range printer ($1000-2000USD) that can reliably print flexible filament for this arm? There is not a lot of 3D printing tech knowledge here and getting replacement parts is near impossible, so something stable and reliable is ideal.

I am also setting up a workshop in a school for disabled in Tanzania. I am using a Hephestos 2 and it is working well with ICE FILAMENTS ICEFIL1FLX139 FLEX Filament, 1.75 mm
I have been told that PLA can soften in the Tanzanian sun. Do you have experience of this?

We used PLA for devices in Ghana, which gets up to almost 50C on some days. SO far we haven't had any negative reports on the PLA. I would suggest NOT leaving it the car on a hot day, though. In my experience, PLA starts to get soft around 90-100C.

Note that the elastic bands used in the Phoenix hand DO break down quickly in heat and humidity. I don't know of a solution for that other than to use the Raptor instead. It shouldn't be an issue for the Flexy.

Hi Gilbert - Our non-profit is at www.enableoutreach.org. We've stopped pushing the Flexy arm. Our volunteers had a hard time sizing, printing and assembling it. We're now focusing on the UnLimbited arm.

Tried printing part of the Flex arm before I read your comment. For some reason at approx. 15mm high it jumped about 3mm along the Y axis and then again after a further 5mm. Stopped the print now anyway and going to email the manufacturers to see if they know. Drive belts all appear tight.
Looks like great work you are doing out there. I hope to be in Tanzania January.

Hi Joe, I can recommed only the printer that I have been using for a long time only to print flexy filament, it´s http://protolab3d.co/ this printer is very robust and you can trust that It will work very well with flexy material. It cost around 1000 dollars.
