Summary

I never play loto but a friend of mine challenged me to make a dice with 49 faces. After a few tries i found a way to do it but modeling this manually is fastidious and i had to restart from scratch each time i changed the design.

Then i decided to make a Blender script to generate it. This script allows to generated a dice with any number of faces. The faces can be engraved like the one i'm publishing here but they can also be inlaid in the dice. This later design needs a transparent filament in order to see the numbers.

I publish files allowing 2 ways of printing the dice:

  • A one piece model: This model works but in my case i had issues in the starting phase as the angles are very hard to print. You may also need supports. I provide the numbers rosace as well for those who have 2 extruders. I didn't test this because i have only 1 extruder.

  • A splitted model: In this case the dice is splitted in 2 parts to be printed easily and glued together. This gives better result.

How I Designed This

The challenge

The point is that this is impossible to make such a dice with the shape of a classic dice as their design require an even number of faces in order to be a fair dice.

Taking a appart some exceptions like a 4 dice, in a classic dice each flat surface is in front of another one on which is printed a number. You can't do this with an odd number of faces.

New specifications

Actually what we want is a number displayed on top of the dice when a flat surface is at the bottom so stabilise the dice. We need 49 faces and 49 numbers on the opposite side.

The trick is to print a number at the opposite side of every 49 faces even if it don't fit on a flat surface because we don't care if the number is flat or not we just want it to be on top of the dice.

My script takes the specified number of flat faces (49 here) and spread them equally on a sphere. Then it generate a number from 1 to 49 in front of those flat faces.

Generalisation

This design works for any number of faces, if you specify 6 this automatically generates a cube, if you specify 4 you obtain a tetrahedron like a classic game dice. Actually classic game dices can be a particular cases of this more generic design.

Ok i will try this. I want you to know that since i made this i found that someone else already did this much more simpler and easy to use 3 years ago.
It is there: http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:58408. The online customizer do not allow to generate a 120 faces (i tried and this end in timeout) so i downloaded it to generate it with OpenSCAD but the software crashes.
Maybe you can try it with another software, meanwhile i will generate it with my script.

His script is way simpler than mine :)

I agree with you that it takes more time than with a 6 faces cubes to stop but it stops. If you are impatient they is a simple solution: use (print ?) a dice arena. By the way you spotted the main problem of such a 'dice' and i can tell you that i'm working on it.
