A Hinge that can be printed in a single step. The main size is 40mm that fits general tapered head screws.

You can use drywall screws, like I did on the picture above. Otherwise the countersunk hole is diameter 4mm (1/8").

Note : that hinge was awarded as Runner Up Prize int the Instructables 3D printing Contest summer 2016 :)

Just print the hinge standing verticaly. One side turns over the seccond.

What size screws does this use?

Do you know if the hinge can be embedded into another project? I have a cylinder that I want to be able to open and close with this hinge but don't want to have to attach a separate hinge. Instead, I'd like to include the hinge component into the existing exterior walls of the 2 cylinder halves. Unfortunately I can't seem to import the STL file into Onshape which is what I used for CAD.

Well, with the free version of OnShape, you should not be able to import and embed any external model into you design. Maybe it's possible with the pay version, but I realy don't know. You can desing your model on Onshape, then export a STL file, then merge together the two STL files (hinge and your model) into the (free) MeshMixer software.

Is there a reason for using holes which are teardrop shaped? I am in the process of printing four of these on one build plate in order to avoid problems with cooling, which I suspect may happen if I print a single one, and have just noticed that the screw holes are not round. Can you provide a round hole version?
Print looking good on my RepRap Mendel90 at the moment :-) Will post a "made one" if all turns out well.


Hi Alan,

If you have a part cooling fan or use ABS with no fan, there's no cooling issue. I usually print that hinges one at a time.

About the teardrop holes, they're made at purpose to avoid bridge trickleing on top of the holes, it's a nice 3D printing trick. No problem about that. The holes still constrain 75% of the screws which are perfectly hold in place.

Actually that hinge is the most downloaded and built of my designs. No issue were reported yet. I printed about 20+ hinges on different printers with same success. The Mendel90 is a pretty good printer, I'm confident everything gonna be all right.

Resolution comes from your nozzle output diameter. It's a hardware measurement. I mean your nozzle must have a hole of 0.5mm maximum (it could be smaller : 0.4mm ; 0.3mm ; etc.), and you should print 0,2mm layers or thinner ones. That's what I recommand, but maybe the hinge will be ok with different hardware/settings. Give it a try and let us know ;)

Unfortunately, I'm not an OpenSCAD user...
To make it strong, I choosed to use a variable shaft diameter.
