Summary

A printable knob and locking nut for the Printrbot Simple v2 with 1/4" Acme threaded rod on the Z axis.

Instructions

The .stl file includes both the knob and a locking nut, since Acme nuts are hard to come by. Print them both, thread the nut onto the top of the Z-axis rod, then thread the knob on after it. Tighten the nut against the bottom of the knob - finger tight, no wrenches needed - to hold it in place.

Exact same thought. Might consider renaming this thing to reflect that this works for the Play as well.

I imported the stl into Sketchup. Scaled the knob up 1.30. Print .2mm layer w/.4 nozzle, PLA. Perfect for a 2pitch 8mm acme screw (Tr8*8-4). No need for nut, it's a really tight fit.

I used this for my Printrbot Simple makers for over a year and it worked beautifully. I then moved up to the Printrbot Plus 1404 and was looking for something similar. Turns out if you simply print this at 1.5x the size, it will fit on the 3/8" ACME of the bigger printerbots

Call me lazy, but I stopped the print after it got the main knurled part of the knob done, and just used that.

When printed, the knob turned out great, but even after 3 retries, the thread on the locking nut keeps becoming a total mess. Any tips on slic3r settings to use for this?

I haven't had any problems printing the nut on our Printrbot Jr, though I haven't actually tried printing on the Simple it should be about the same. If you don't have a fan I imagine the threads might sag a little. If it's not that, I'd try a lower layer height; you could leave the first layer fairly thick for good adhesion but drop the rest down to 0.2 or 0.15 and see whether the threads come out better. I don't remember what I used on ours, but looking at them the nut seems to have thinner layers, so perhaps 0.2 versus the usual 0.3.
