Summary

Quick and dirty Alien Egg like lamp design to test my new Ultimaker... this is a real challenge to print without getting stringing in the side holes.

hello
my printer is now working on this egg
but what kind of light you can using in this thing ?.
top thanks,
regards

hello, I have a doubt. I am new in this world, so I like to do my own designs, but do not know what software to use. Soldworks I work with, but, with what program are made these pieces? thanks and regards

Wasnt too tuff for my prusa :) fun print!

Whatt app did you use to create the egg?

lightwave 3d

I couldn't print this at all with 0,2 mm layers and 100% size. The overhangs in the very first millimeters are huge! How did you manage to get it started? By doing super thin slicing or am I missing something?

what 3d printer are you using?, It did seem a bit strange when it was printing the initial overhangs, but it seemed to do just fine for me?, also what temp are you printing at?

I have the Ultimaker and guess I tried it at about 230 C. I re-sliced it just to make sure, and yes, the first 3 layers look impossible to print on top of each other. The stange thing is that I have pretty much the same setup as you. I might try it again but without the first layers. If you have time, check the first layers of your code in skeinlayer O:-)

Hello.. I printed a somewhat smaller copy (6cm height) of this and recorded last 50-minutes of it as a 720P video.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fYAaWnk5hgswww.youtube.com/watch?v=fYAaWn...

The egg printed nicely on clear PLA at Emaker huxley, except at couple places the holes grew together (near at the top).. May well be that feature size was too small or I used too hot/fast extrusion.

Would you mind telling me which program you used to make this egg?

I really like your egg, I made one with ABS oversized as a gift for Christmas. (Dimension: 25cm height printed in two parts) :)

It's a nice organic model - My Egg was printed at 50% size just for the challenge.

if anyone is interested, the print pictured was printed on an ultimaker running marlin beta 2, using repG-26 with skeinforge 35, using the failsafe ultimaker profile with a 0.15 layer height. print time was about 5hrs with 100mm/sec rate, PLA, 250 deg print temp..

PLA with 250deg? thats really hot i think.. im printing with about 195-200 deg

yeah it's running a bit too hot, I was getting some oozing, I've lowered the tmps now to the 240 range and seems to be working better, at 195 I haven't even been able to extrude, perhaps the reported readings on temp I am getting are off and the extruder is actually lower than what's reported, I will investigate.

I saw it today.. He printed it. Looks great aside from the strings left from the Ultimaker. Thanks Andy!

Did you print it out yet? At closer look that first and last picture look like a rendering...

yup did a few renders first.... I just posted a few pictures of the ultimaker print, not bad, stringing is pretty bad, took about an hour to clean it up, and still isn't perfect....
