Summary

Buckminster Fuller's Dymaxion Projection (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dymaxion_map) maps the world onto an icosahedron, creating a 'one world island'. This model, presented in single and dual extrusion STLs, provides a unique world map. The OpenSCAD file (rough around the edges,) is provided for ongoing customization.

Be careful to scale the model down to the proper size for your printbed.

I'm still working on the foldable version, stay tuned!

Instructions

I took a JPG of the land for the world into InkScape and exported it to OpenSCAD. I created the triangles and triangle borders in OpenSCAD and merged them together.

As to whether it can be made foldable, I'd say that it's not needed. The whole idea of the Dymaxion projection is that it's a very good projection of the Earth onto a flat surface. Folding it up into a globe somewhat defeats the purpose, in that on a 3D printer you can print the globe as a perfect sphere easily.

I will be printing this tonight, to show at a Maker Faire down here (in Orlando) next week. They're gonna love it!

Thanks! That's pretty much what led me to decide to put it out as is. The flat version really emphasizes the 'one world island' idea that took the dymaxion model past being just a great projection and into a philosophical statement about the unity of humankind. Cheers!

Yep. That's one of the things that I like about Buckminster Fuller - not only did he do cool-looking things, but with an even cooler depth of thought behind it.

Surely, this should be made of modules, and fold back into an icosahedron?

My first attempts were designed to foldable, with tabs. I found the ABS to be unenthusiastic about the folds and the tabs. I do have the individual triangles as STLs, but for whatever reason I made the land as a negative (indent) instead of positive. I want to keep trying with this approach, but it soaked up a lot of failed attempts before I went this direction. I'll try and clean up my experiments and post them as well.
