Summary

This version of my Advanced Word Pen, is ready to accept the widely available Bic ball pen inner. The pen body is rounded making it comfortable to write with. The output file includes a fitted cap and helper tabs to prevent the print from lifting off the build-plate during printing. The pen length scales according to the text length which is automatically centred. I am still doping the print with the pen inner to ensure a snug fit - see instructions.

Instructions

I have been successfully printing this pen with ReplicatorG and Sailfish firmware by taking advantage of the Sailfish [email protected] function. Successful printing requires precise measurement of your filament diameter to ensure the cap and ball-point inner fit snugly. I still dope the print with the pen inner to ensure a snug fit.

I created a duplicate profile and edited the start.gcode to add M322 Z4.5 to the bottom of the file. This tells the sailfish firmware to pause at 4.5mm. You can obviously pause the printer manually, or set the zpos position using the printer control interface, but if you plan to print a lot of pens, creating a custom profile in ReplicatorG is the way to go. I have included a sample ReplicatorG/Sailfish profile for the Replicator 2 that includes this modification and fine tuned settings for printing these pens.

The Bic ball pen cartridges I am using are from a standard Bic ball pen. I purchased an economy packet of 25 Bic ball pens from my local office supply store for about $10.

Just confirming, do I pause the printing at XX minutes/XX% in and add the ink? Thanks.

thx a lot. It is a great thing!!!! Perfect for Xmas gifts :-)

How did you make it. I am using Sketchup, but when I want to put letters in I fail to get solid bodies ...

best regards

Hey, gettin' better each time! May I ask how long the shortest pen you can make with this is?

If you snip the inner you can make it as short as you like.

Haha of course! This is why you're the genius here. ;)

Nice design. Can you upload the lid by itself? It is really tight. I was hoping to print it at 101%. Thank you!!!

I have uploaded 3 versions of the lid with increasing gap sizes. The default is 0.2 so 0.3 and 0.4 are increasingly larger.

Thank you!!! What are the settings that you recommend? I created one with 0% infill and it printed flat. :-)

I print with 1 shell, 100% infill and 0.27 layer height - but you can definitely go finer.

This is neat. Lets you have a ballin' customized case while using widely available (& cheap) pen innards. Let's see, will this be featured tomorrow or next week?

You should submit this to the #backtoschool challenge to give Gyrobot a run for their money!

Awesome design! Make sure to check out the Challenge page for all the details on what constitutes an eligible entry here: http://mbot.co/14r66JPmbot.co/14r66JP

I have also created a matching customisable pencil case http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:149378http://www.thingiverse.com/thi... which hope is eligible - but I can't upload more than one customisable thing to a page.
