You might consider wiring conduit for the piping. It is steel and has a much thinner wall so will weigh much less. It is also easy to cut using a tube cutter.

I've made the Tinkercad design public so you can edit it for conduit compatibility if you like.

Thanks for the info. I may use your design for my filament spool storage as it has gotten out of hand and is developing a personality of its own as it spreads out from my printer area.

I'm actually using this setup now not only for storage but for dispensing during printing. I slide a piece of black plastic "Polyflex" tubing from Home Depot over the conduit, which reduces friction on the spool edges.

You are correct, conduit is way better - much cleaner and no threads. My next filament rack uses conduit but I've a bit more work to do on it before publishing.
